Fort William History-Origin-Importance-Architecture

History of Fort William, Kolkata: After the death of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1707, the Mughal Empire in Bengal had shattered into bits of tiny territories and fell into the hands of Bengal's Provincial Viceroys.

During that period actually two Forts William were built. The first having been built by the British East India Company in 1700 was captured by Siraj-ud-Daulah - the Nawab of Bengal in 1756 and was renamed 'Alinagar' where the infamous event of the 'Black Hole of Calcutta' occurred in its prison. This led to the construction of the second Fort William in the Maidan by the British Military's Officer - Major General Robert Clive (also known as Clive of India) after the Battle of Plassey in which the British defeated the Nawab and his French Allies.
