After Agra Fort and Taj Mahal, the monument which is most important in Agra is Itmad-ud-Daulah. Originally Itmad-ud-Daulah (meaning Pillar of the state) was called Mirza Ghiyas Beg, father of Noor Jahan. Noor Jahan was the wife of Jahangir. Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan is the grand daughter of Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Itmad-ud-Daulah’s mausoleum was commissioned by Noor Jahan. It was built during 1622 – 28.
Itmad-ud-Daulah was often described as a jewel box and is sometimes called “Baby Taj”. Often, the tomb of this is regarded as a draft of Taj Mahal. This is a beautiful structure situated on the left bank of river Yamuna, approximately 1.5 kilometers up-stream. It is close to the Yamuna Bridge Railway Station.
