Another dimension to Agra city is Agra Fort, also called Lal Qila. This monument is 4.7 kms away from Agra city. It was built by Akbar in Red Sandstone when he was through with consolidation of his power after accession to the power in 1654. It worked both as royal residence and military strategic point. Red fort houses many palaces inside it which were later added by next generation Mughal Emperors like Jahangir and Shah Jahan.
Most buildings in Agra are a mixture of different architectural styles. These are large fortified residences built at many strategic points of Mughal Empire. It had more than 500 buildings. The assimilation of these buildings has given a distinct look to the fort. It is located on the river Yamuna near railway station. This fort is just 2.5 km away from Taj Mahal.
