A Rajput Jatt named Goraya established a small village on Grand trunk road (NH 1) between Ludhiana and Jalandhar. It is said that the tribe of Goraya are a descendants of Sarons family (nomad and pastoral tribe from Sirsa of Haryana) of Lunar Rajputs. Another story is that the Gorayas are descendents of Sombansi Rajputs.
Goraya Rajput clan ruled this region. After independence the town of Goraya was merged into the district of Jalandhar of Punjab.
Due to its proximity with the two largest cities (Jalandhar and Ludhiana) in Punjab, Goraya has few industries including Ajaco group and several market places such as Rurka road market and Rishi Bazaar, and also shopping malls.
