Phen Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over an area of 110 sq km, is a home to a large variety of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is situated north-east of Kanha National Park, Mandla. It forms a micro-core of the reserve. The significance of this micro-core lies in the exchange of gene-pool and dispersal of wildlife populations between the two conservation units. The state Government notified Phen Wildlife Sanctuary as a buffer zone and treated it as a separate division which is under the unified control of the Reserve Management. The various Wildlife conservation practices and eco-development in the National Park, Buffer Zone and Phen Wildlife Sanctuary are carried out under the Management Plan for the year 2001-2002 to 2010-2011. The major animal species found here include tiger, leopard, wild boar, chital, sambar, nilgai, jackal and panther. One could also see a large variety of birds. The best time to visit this Sanctuary is from November to June.
