Kannur is located in Kannur district of Kerala along the coast of the Arabian Sea. The town has 8 kmlong seashore and its coordinates are 11°52′08″N 75°21′20″E. It is situated at an elevation of 1.02 meters (2.98 feet).
The Kannur District is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode District to the south, Wayanad District to the south-east and the Arabian Sea to the west.The Western Ghats lie in the east, which form the border with Karnataka State.
The district is irrigated by Six rivers, the longest being the Valapattanam River which flows through a distance of 110 km. The other rivers are Kuppam, Mahe River, Anjarakandi, Thalassery, Ramapuram and Perumba. The highest place in the district is Elapeedika (2,500 - 3,200 ft.), near Peravoor.
Kannur derives its name from Kanathur, an ancient village.
Another story says that Kannur derives its name from two Malayalam words: Kannan (Krishna), a Hindu deity, and Ur (means place)-making it "the place of Lord Krishna".
