Kannur is located in Kannur district of Kerala along the coast of the Arabian Sea. The town has 8 kmlong seashore and its coordinates are 11°52′08″N 75°21′20″E. It is situated at an elevation of 1.02 meters (2.98 feet).

The Kannur District is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode District to the south, Wayanad District to the south-east and the Arabian Sea to the west.The Western Ghats lie in the east, which form the border with Karnataka State.

The district is irrigated by Six rivers, the longest being the Valapattanam River which flows through a distance of 110 km. The other rivers are Kuppam, Mahe River, Anjarakandi, Thalassery, Ramapuram and Perumba. The highest place in the district is Elapeedika (2,500 - 3,200 ft.), near Peravoor.

Kannur derives its name from Kanathur, an ancient village.

Another story says that Kannur derives its name from two Malayalam words: Kannan (Krishna), a Hindu deity, and Ur (means place)-making it "the place of Lord Krishna".

Kannuralso known as Cannanore is an ancientcoastal city in the Kannur district of Kerala. It is the administrative headquarters of Kannur district. It is the 6th largest city in Kerala and the largest city of North Malabar region.

Kannur has been recognized as one of ten best cities in India as per the ratings given by the Economics Research firm Indicus Analytics, based on housing, earnings and investments. Kannur has always been a favorite destination of the foreign traveler. Europeans, Chinese and Arabs have visited Kannur coasts.Kannur is famous for its historical importance and unspoiled beaches.

Kannur is known for its beautiful and green beaches. It is also an important industrial center of Kerala. Kannur is known as the Land of Looms and Lore's due to the loom industries operative in the area and ritualistic folk arts held in temples.

The mountainous region of the area is covered by rainforests, timber plantations, plantations of coffee, tea and different types of spices like cardamom.

Agriculture and Fishery is the main occupation of the local residents. As per statistics, 13 percent of the population of Kannur is employed overseas.

The Fort Road is the most prominent shopping area in the city.
