About Ranganatha Swami Temple Information-Mysore

Located at Srirangapatanam, the name of this town is derived from the famous Ranganatha Swami Temple. Just few kilometres away from Mysore, the temple attracts many pilgrims as it is known to be a pilgrimage centre for the Vaishnavas. The Ranganatha Swami Temple is a dedication to Lord Ranganatha, who is a form of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the largest temples of the Karnataka state. Vijayanagar rulers built the structure in the 9^th century. The huge temple with a grand gopura (pyramidal temple tower) and fort like walls is a fusion of Hoysala and Vijayanagar architectural styles.

The idol of Ranganatha is portrayed reclining on the bed, laid out by the great serpent Aadi Sesha. This image of Lord Vishnu forms the main attraction of the temple.

The pillars of the temple are carved with 24 forms of Lord Vishnu. It also enshrines the images of river Cauvery and sage Gautama. The inner walls of the temple are embellished with the images of Panchmukha Anjaneya (five-faced Hanuman) and Lord Srinivasa.
