Sringeri City Travel Guide
Sringeri (also known as Shringeri) is situated on the left bank of the pristine river Tunga, near Malnad in Chikmagalur District of Karnataka. It lies in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, 150 kms from Mangalore and 327 kms from Bangalore. The town is a sacred pilgrimage for thousands of Hindus who visit the shrine for its religious importance and architectural significance.
The name Sringeri is derived from Shringa Giri (Rishyashringa-giri), a nearby hill that is believed to have contained the hermitage of Rishi Vibhandaka and his son Rishyashringa. Sringeri is reached by a hill road from Bangalore that passes through aromatic herb and coffee plantations, which throw up a spectacular display of flowers in the month of May.
The Adi Shankara Temple, Kere Anjaneya Temple, Malayala Brahma Temple, Mallikarjuna Temple, Sharadamba Temple, Sri Chappara Anjaneya Temple, Sri Parsawanath Thirthankara Jain Temple, Sringeri Mutt, Torana Ganapati Temple, Vidya Shankara Temple are the prime attractions of Sringeri.
Since this temple town is small, it is easy to cover most of the places. The prominent temples to visit in Sringeri are the Sarada Temple and the Vidya-Shankara Temple. Guru Nivas, across the river, is the dwelling place of the present pontiff of the Sringeri Mutt, Jagadguru His Holiness Sri Abhinav Bharti Vidyathirtha Swamigal.
The less visited is the Shiva temple of Bettada Malahanikareswara, popularly known as Mallikarjuna, on a small hillock. The Sarada Temple, the Vidya-Shankara Temple and the Guru Nivas are walking distance from the bazaar and the bus station.
To reach the main temple that is about 1 km from the bus stand, autos charge Rs.10. On the main Bharati Street is the ancient Sri Chappara Anjaneya Temple and the Sri Parsawanath Tirthankara Jain Temple, which are worth a visit. These are at walking distance from Sarada Temple's main gate. Torana Ganapathi, Kere Anjaneya, Malayala Brahma and Adi Shankara are the other temples that can be covered in 2-3 hrs by auto for Rs.60.
The nearest big city is Bangalore that is about 327 kms from Sringeri. Shimoga, Thirthahalli, Agumbe and Udupi are other nearby attractions that can be visited.
