About Prakasam Barrage Information-Vijayawada

Prakasam Barrage, a road bridge, stands like a watchdog across the River Krishna stretching about 1223 meters. Prakasam Barrage has a panoramic lake and three canals that run through the city of Vijayawada

In the year 1798, the idea of constructing a barrage across Krishna was presented. This idea was developed  by Captain Buckle. It was improved further by Captain Best and Captain Lake in 1839 and 1841. In about a decade, i.e., in 1850, this idea was approved by the Board of Directors of East India Company. The construction work started in 1852 and was completed in 1855.

After Independece, the State Government of Andhra Pradesh constructed a new regulator and a bridge, which was completed in 1957. This bridge, which helps in irigating about 12 lakh acres of land, was named after the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu.
