The Nizam College is one of the existing historical buildings built during the reign of Nawab Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, the VI Asaf Jah of Hyderabad. The college building was actually a palace of Fakhrul-ul-Mulk II, a noble of Hyderabad. Nizam College was established in 1887 after the Hyderabad School (also called as Noble School) and Madrasa-I-Aliya merged. The founder of the college was Nawab Imad-ul-Mulk who did wonders in the field of education as the Director of Education. He then appointed Dr. Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, father of Sarojini Naidu, the Nightingale of India, as the first Principal of the college. Thus an educational institution was established. Initially Nizam College was affiliated to the University of Madras for 60 years and later on February 19, 1947, it was made a constituent college of Osmania University.
The college is said to be the pioneer in many fields like, the first college to impart education through English Medium, the first to admit a girl student for higher education, the first to institute B.A. (Honours), B.Sc. and M.A. courses, the first to introduce Biophysics as a special paper for M.Sc., (Physics) in 1974 and as an optional at the under-graduate level in 1990. It has many prominent persons who completed their education from this institute, to its credit. Today, the college excels in every field of education, sports, art and entertainment.
