Vizag City Travel Guide

Dotingly called as Vizag, Visakhapatnam is a port city on the north-eastern part of Andhra Pradesh. It is said that Visakhapatnam is so named as a temple of Lord Vaisakheswara lies submerged somewhere close by in the sea. Situated among the hills of Eastern Ghats facing the Bay of Bengal to the east, the city is the administrative headquarters of Visakhapatnam District. Vizag was originally a fishing village and now it has one of the country's largest ports and an oldest shipyard. Apart from being a home to several state-owned heavy industries like Coromandel Fertilizers, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. and one of the most advanced steel plants, the city is also sought-after tourist destination. It is also the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy.

Visakhapatnam offers many places to see and things to do where you can spend a relaxing holiday. Lying in the coastal region, the city has many beaches and there are temples standing still from centuries. Some of them include Simhachalam, Araku Valley, Borra Caves, Anantagiri hills, Bheemunipatnam and many more. Recent finds in this area reveals the Buddhist settlement here mainly on the hills around. Bavikonda, Totlakonda and Pavuralakonda are some of the hills on which the Buddhist remnants have been found. These are said to belong to somewhere between third century BC and second century AD.

The city has a distinct type of climatic condition. Summer starts in the month of April and continues till mid June. There are rains from the month of June until September. Sometimes there are heavier rains due to cyclones. Winter generally crawls in the month of December and remains till the end of January.
