Pithapuram City Travel Guide

Pithapuram Andhra Pradesh - Pithapuram is a small village near Kakinada. For years, it has been known as a pilgrimage centre and has famous shrines like Kukkuteshwara Swami (temple dedicated to Lord Shiva), Kunthimadhava Swami temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Sri Sripada Vallabha Anaagha Datta Kshetram (temple dedicated to Lord Dattatreya) and Sri Venu Gopala Swami Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Each of the temples here has its own importance and sanctity. Pithapuram is also famous for Padagaya Kshetram, which is said to be one of the three main Gayas (the other two being Siro Gaya in Bihar and Nabi Gaya in Orrisa). A legends has it that, when the Triumvirate (Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara), killed the demon king Gayasura, his head, trunk and legs fell in three different places. This is the place where the demon's legs have fallen and hence it turned out into a water tank. From then on, this place came to be known as Padagaya Kshetram. Shraddha (death anniversary) of elderly people are performed at this place and it is believed that only then the soul of the forefathers will find peace in the heaven.
