Biccavolu City Travel Guide

Biccavolu (also spelt as Bikkavolu) is a small village in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. This pretty village is known for beautiful stone temples belonging to period between 9th and 10th centuries when the Eastern Chalukyans ruled the region. Most of them are the temples of Lord Shiva that stand as an excellent example of the architectural grandeur of those times. These temples resemble Dravidian Style of architecture.

The village owes its name, as "Biccavolu", to a ruler Gunaga Vijayaditya III of Turupu Chalukya Vamsam during 849-892 BC. Biccavolu's important temples include Sri Raja Rajeswari vari Temple and Sri Chandrashekara Swami vari Temple. There are about three more temples of Lord Shiva forming a group and a monolithic Lord Ganesha in the close vicinity of the village. There is another famous temple of Lord Shiva called as Golingeshwara Swami Temple in Biccavolu.

The temples stand as the testimony of the glorious Chalukya Empire and speak volumes about architectural skills of those times.
