Arasavalli is home to an ancient and famous temple of Sri Suryanarayana, the Sun God, located near Srikakulam town in Srikakulam District of Andhra Pradesh. The Suryanarayana temple at Arasavalli is said to be the only temple dedicated to Sun God in Southern India. Arasavalli temple is different from both the Surya temple at Konark in Orissa that is appreciated for its fine sculptures and art, and the temple (of Lord Surya) in Madhya Pradesh where the devotees themselves worship the 14 cm deity.
The temple at Arasavalli dates back to seventh century A.D. and was said to be constructed by Devendra Varma, the ruler of Kalinga Dynasty. People from all over Andhra Pradesh and surrounding states come here to seek the blessings of Lord Suryanarayana. One cannot afford to miss visiting Arasavalli at least when they are in Srikakulam Town as this is a stone throw from here and is easily accessible.
