The Upper Dachigam being at an altitude of 14100 feet is not accessible for a visit throughout the year. The ideal time to visit Upper Dachigam is in summer months between May and August when the climate is cool and pleasant with temperature hovering around 8 degrees to 14 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures are harsh at -10 degrees Celsius. Winters are the best time to view the Hanguls in the Dachigam Park when they climb down to lower Valleys. The ideal time to visit the Lower Dachigam is between Sept and December. The Park is at its colourful best in the autumn month of October when the green leaves on trees change to different hues of orange and red and yellow just before winter shedding.
Be mindful of the following:
1.Obtain an ‘Entry-Permit’ from the Check-post at the entrance of the Park or the Wildlife Warden’s office. You would also require permission for camping. If shooting for a documentary, or other commercial purposes, then ‘Photography-Permit’ is required.
2.Wear tried and tested walking shoes with grooved soles. You don’t need a shoe-bite on such long walking-sprees. Heels won’t take you too far either as the road in Lower Dachigam is made of gravel and the Upper Dachigam is undulated and uneven.
3.Walk in designated walkways only. You don’t want to surprise the wildlife in the Park. More importantly, you don’t want to be surprised by the wildlife. Taking shortcuts could be risky and hazardous.
4.Do not disturb or irritate the Wildlife. You can’t handle the same treatment meted out to you by them. Imagine being chased by them just because you nagged them!
5.Do not pollute the Park environment with noise, throwing batteries or garbage. Dispose at designated areas only. Every single visitor needs to make this effort.
6.Do not wear any revealing clothing and attract undue attention of the Wildlife.
